An interactive observation tower, surveying one man's attempt at making sense of it all.

Basically Earth day was great when it first started. Legislation was passed to help preserve our natural resources and committees were formed. However like all things new, the glory of it fades. It's like getting a bike when you are little. Years later you have totally forgotten about your bike in the excitement of getting a new car. The fact that your old bike is environmentally friendly and gives you exercise that you need is secondary now because the car is more convenient. The same goes for Earth day. In 1970 when it was first declared around America people were enthused and so into it. Now some people don't even know about earth day while others that do know about it forget about it the very next day. Granted there are still activists out there I don't know if the numbers will ever reach the real amount it was before.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Debbie. I believe in the idea of Earth Day and the excitement people had in 1970-I understand the purpose-but today, not as many people are as participatory. Some people today even say they believe in Earth Day and "going green" but its become so superficial, and they just like having that label because it makes them feel like they are important to the cause, but they're not. Even on Nickelodeon, they used to have "Earth day hour" where everyone turns off their lights and everything for an hour, but this year its reduced to "Earth day minute", so what will it be next year, "Earth day second"? I admire my older brother for his awareness and passion when it comes to helping the environment and educating the youth. I plant a tree with him every year for Earth Day :)
ReplyDeleteThese 10 things about Earth Day were interesting. I like knowing the background about holidays; but now, no one really takes pride in Earth day. They need lighting, and TV, and taking long showers (who doesn't :P), but sometimes people need to realize that it's hurting our environment and that they should think of things to cut back on to help save Planet Earth. :]

I agree with both Erica and Debbie..... Earth day, the "going green" revolution, had become very superficial. Its a trend that looks cool, but not many people do it as much as they say. Earth Day used to have a lot of meaning and now people barely even realize as it comes and goes.. those who do however, make it a one day thing and rarely follow through. While we all claim that going green is the right thing to do, how many of us actually take the time to help out our earth and surroundings? While i do believe Earth Day is something that should be followed, I also think that if going green was less of a fad and a fashion statement, people would have more respect for it.

i actually did a paper on earth day my 9th grade year. i realy think that our generation can realy take advantage of this. I mean we're more into the going green thing than our predecessors...well us and AL GORE anyway. I think that every day should be earth day, every day theres talk about stimulas, now is the time to stimulate the earth. taking care of the earth is taking care of ourselves, since afterall it is our home. Thats just my point of view on earth day.
