Sick Around The World
Without a doubt, the biggest domestic challenge our nation faces is affordable health care. We currently spend more money per capita than any nation but receive an inadequate product in return. Quality is sporadic, access is frequently out of reach, and cost increases remain unabated. The system threatens to suffocate our economy yet there is little agreement in Washington on how to tackle the beast. President Obama's plan is slowly evolving but it continues to run into the same tired arguments the opposition always offers. It seems clear that Americans will have to forfeit their right to choose freedom from coverage in order to control costs. It also seems necessary that lifestyle changes will have to occur for the millions of Twinkie eating, cigarette smoking, couch potatoes who believe health care is a one way street. Click on the title above to access five video segments on how industrialized countries offer health care to their citizens.

The sad truth is there really is no way to make a quality health care system affordable. If there was universal health care, doctors would lose incentive to work hard and those thinking of becoming doctors would lose incentive to do so. So therefore by making health care more affordable, its quality would seriously decline. There's a reason why so many people from other countries come here for health care. Universal health care would ultimately lengthen the amount of time it takes one to get medical attention and decrease the quality of care they are getting.

ReplyDeleteIt is a dog-eat-dog world out there and healthcare is a prime example. There are many doctors to choose from and they all strive to be the best and acquire the most income. Consumers want the best doctor that will offer the best result. The problem is not everyone can afford the best. This is where America needs compromise, Washington needs to keep that incentive going for doctors to strive to be the best. At the same time, their prices need to drop in order for universal healthcare and that would lower the availability of doctors. Much like how there is a high demand for teachers.
raise taxes and people will initially get angry. Obama then needs to show the improvement of society quickly and easily that everybody can see so they know thier money is being put to good use.-Mike Shep(sorry)
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is a single country on the planet that can say it has the best healthcare system, regardless how it's funded (public or private) or who runs the hospitals (public or private). Pretty much every country in the world has some mix between the two, and the specific mix is constantly debated and tweaked by governments.
ReplyDeleteI believe the real focus in healthcare should not be on who should pay, but how can we ensure equitable access to care to our country's population, regardless of socio-economic status, and how can we ensure that the access to care is timely.
