I really like all of these cartoons. In my opinion, political cartoons are a good way of showing what is important in our world, and expresses our thoughts and feeling in a humorous way, through the use of satire. I especially like the second one, which shows how no matter what Florida homeowners do, they just can't catch a break, as well as the last one, showing how many parents, especially that of school aged children, are now unemployed.
All of these political cartoons show an exaggerated version of what is going on right now in our society. Some of these cartoons have a funny connotation to them, but at the same time express a very sad truth. For example although the Madoff cartoon is funny showing him run a ponzi scheme in prison, but using cigarettes opposed to money many people lost all of there money because of him. I think that to some people who were not directly affected by Madoff they might find this cartoon comical, but for the who lost their entire retirement funds, this cartoon would be far from funny. Another example is the last one where all of the parents can't take their kid to work because they don't have any job to take them to. This cartoon is not meant to be funny, but to depict the truth of America's wide spread unemployment at this time. Overall, I think that cartoons are able to get a message across extremely well if it be funny or a serious issue in our society.
Cartoons have been used through the generations to make fun of elections, people in power, the government and so on since, it is a simple way to portray the issue. The cartoonists who came up with these three illustrations must have had two ideas in mind to demonstrate the sad truth of Florida’s latest events but at the same time they are attempting to lighten the mood. Sadly the third cartoon could be an outlook on the younger generation’s future if the United States does not rise from the current Recession. As comical as the Madoff cartoon is at the same time I would not be laughing if my parents or grandparents lost all of their savings because of his poor decisions to better his life.
It is true that cartoons are meant to be pictures that summarize the message they are trying to send. However, I'm not sure that having cartoons that reflect such negative thoughts when America is already in a dark place. We know unemployment is rising, but we're not nearly as bad as we were during the Great Depression. The last image reminds me of photos that i have seen of people in the 1940's waiting in lines with food stamps. America is not that far in...yet. People who have exprienced or are currently experience what the Florida homeowner, Madoff, and unemployment cartoons are portraying would not enjoy these cartoons. Why should we? It could be our families next.
