Are You Surprised That President Obama Won The Nobel Peace Prize?
I believe it's not an exaggeration to say that the choice was a major surprise. Having only been President for 9 months, he's initiated some efforts but they have yet to reap tangible rewards. Click on the title above to read one man's opinion and weigh in on what this might mean for Obama's effectiveness forward.

Obama has not done enough as president to be worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize. Like Kristof said, his efforts havent reaped any real benefits. If anyone should have recieved the Nobel Peace Prize it should have been Bill Clinton again. He freed two American journalists who were held captive by Kim Jong Il, a task Barack Obama could not achieve.

Obama, i believe, is deserving of this prize. Not personally as obama, but for what he represents. Obama, as a new president, is looked upon as a new representation of the power of the U.S. And by awarding this man such a prize, it shows that the U.S., as always is a country responsible for securing peace in the world. This award shows that Obama represents peace, even though he has but talked about peace. It solidifies his representation.
Obama has done several things in start of his year and his 3 years to come; But less then a years worth of office, unless drastically making an impact, doesnt nessesary deserve the noble peace prize. Obama has good intentions and has started his ideas, but has this been enough? Many people have strived years on end to just be applicable for the award. Obama should have to abide by the same rules and when he makes actual peace in the middle east maybe he can recieve the award.

i agree with the opinion of this article. Kristof questions Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Though I do believe that Obama has taken great steps towards Middle Eastern peace as the article notes, I don't think that the beginning steps of change is something that equates to the Peace Prize, probably one of the most prestigious awards.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama is a very impressive and powerful man who had accomplished a lot already in his life, but whether or not those accomplishments add up to this award is questionable. In years down the road when his administration had made the changes that they have promised since he has taken the presidency, then I do not doubt that he would be more deserving of this award. There are many other people who have worked their entire lives toward peace negotiations in different parts of the world and are more than deserving of the world now.
I think Obama is trying his hardest in changing our enviorment, our society, the way people act as well as making education tougher. All these desires and ambitions people lost from the turmoil is coming to a new surprise. More people are busy with things to do, money doesn't mean so much now and days. I mean the dollars' value is decreasing as we speak. The pursuit to happiness is taking place and now people are coming to structure. I am for Obama not because he is the president but because his socialistic skills are ingenious. STOP BEING BLIND WITH UGLY THINGS.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Obama should have won the Nobel Peace Prize. As president, he has not held up any of his promises. Keeping Guatanamo Bay open and continuing torture terrorist suspects is not peaceful at all. If Obama won the prize because of his want for world peace, then almost 90% of the world should win the prize. If anyone deserves it, it is Bill Clinton. He was able to succesfully negotiate the safe return of the two journalists that were being held in Korea. That one action is more deserving of the peace prize than anything Obama has done combined.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was too early for Obama to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Although Obama closed Guantanamo Bay, made efforts toward nuclear disarmament, and increased diplomacy and dialogue with the world, he has only been president for about nine months and therefore I believe he needs a longer track record. Obama has yet to execute the plans that he has put in place for world peace. The Nobel committee also awarded Obama with the prize so that he would follow through with his plans, continue working towards world peace and preserve his reputation

I think too many people are attacking Obama and not the people who chose Obama. Obama didn't push to get this award, it was put upon him. How can we all take stabs at him for something that he had no involvement on? Other than that, I do agree that he was wrongly given the award. He has done very little in comparsion to his predecessors and perhaps we should have waited to see if what he has done/what he will do is worthy of an award.

ReplyDeleteI am in agreement with the many opinions that president Obama's award of the Nobel Peace Price was premature. A significant fact was that his nomination for the award came within twelve days of his election. One may assume that President Obama's pre-election platform on his desire for open dialogue with nations like Iran had a great influence on the nobel committee. However, the desire to accomplish something is not the same as getting positive outcomes. I believe, Doctor Paul Farmer for his work in Haiti and Rwanda demonstrates the type of deserving outcomes one would except a Nobel Prize Laureate to accomplish.
