I think that Midwest students having higher SAT scores than East coast students is definitely a case of selection bias. I agree with the article because the results show that so many more students took the SAT on the East coast compared to the Midwest. Therefore the results are bound to show that the scores are better in the Midwest. The few students that do take the SAT in the Midwest are probably bright students who are planning on going to college. The article does say that another possibility for the surprising outcome could be that the students in the Midwest take the ACT more than the SAT. This could be true but the schools in the Northeast are spending more money on students than schools in the Midwest are. Also, most east coast students are required to take the SAT. Therefore I think that the difference is not that students in the Midwest are smarter than east coast students but that there are so many more students in the East that it is not fair to compare the two regions.
