Did you know that the Wizard of Oz was an allegory about the Populist Movement in the U.S. in the late 1800s? It is also an Economics lesson in what can happen if the money supply is allowed to contract and deflation plagues the country. Much can be learned about today's crisis by clicking the title above and reading the article.
This is really interesting! I think Dorothy definitely has the "Everyman American" spirit. She's determined and is always positive and hopeful. She inspires her friends to go after what they want (a brain, a heart, etc.) and is an all-around American dreamer. I also find it really funny that the Wizard of Oz represents American presidents. Basically the article and Littlefield are saying that presidents of that time period were all a big sham. However, I would have liked the Wicked Witch to represent something a little more scary. Even though she is the Wicked Witch of the West and therefore represents the West, I feel like she should represent something dramatically scary. I'm all for the entertainment! :]
